Promoting Family Reunification
Full-suite documentary production for advocacy and awareness.
-
Public Knowledge’s Family Integrity & Justice Works sought to create advocacy videos on the child welfare system to advance FIJW’s work to support families and end racial injustice in the system.
-
I developed three videos in consultation with FIJW staff.
The two documentary videos focus on the stories of impacted women and families. I created question lists, planned shoots, and coordinated logistics. I recorded the documentary pieces solo, and edited the footage into completed videos for FIJW, coordinating with the FIJW team to ensure I accurately captured their voice and message.
For the commercial, I edited the provided script down to a reasonable length, gathered footage, coordinated with a voiceover artist, and edited together the video. The women featured in these videos shared some of their deepest vulnerabilities in order to make this advocacy work possible. My deepest thanks to them for trusting me with their stories and images.
Full Circle.
Full Circle centers on a “healing circle” for mothers whose children were removed by the child welfare system. It delves into the harms caused by the Adoption and Safe Families Act’s (ASFA) arbitrary time limits, which don’t account for the realities many parents face, and proposes solutions for a more just and nuanced approach to child welfare.
Alexandra’s Story.
Alexandra’s Story follows Alexandra and her husband through her incarceration, the removal of their children, and their fight to maintain a relationship with their children after their parental rights were terminated because of statutory time limits.
Imagine.
Imagine is a commercial-style video that shares FIJW’s vision for a child welfare system that replaces family-harming practices with community-based supports.
