Community and Sustainability

Directing a documentary on New York City’s only nonprofit recycling redemption center.

  • Sure We Can is a nonprofit recycling center serving the local community through recycling, composting, gardening, and arts. When Nonprofit Finance Fund sought to highlight a client who was doing great work in the community, Sure We Can was the obvious choice.

  • This three-video series highlights Sure We Can’s work to support its community and build circular economies, as well as Nonprofit Finance Fund’s financial support that allowed Sure We Can to purchase the property they operate out of. I directed these videos as a staff member of Nonprofit Finance Fund, working with two other videographer/editors to produce, film, and edit the resulting documentary pieces. I also oversaw distribution, social media, and web copy.

Building a Sustainable Urban Culture.

Sure We Can works toward environmental and economic justice through recycling, composting, gardening, and arts. The nonprofit processes as many as 60,000 cans and bottles a day, paying canners (people who collect cans and bottles) 5 cents per item. Sure We Can also offers canners a sheltered place to store their gear and sort containers.
